I plan on being fiscally responsible and putting a stop on spending tax payer money on things that serve a select few instead of the Bedford citizens as a whole. I plan on being honest in my communications and not defraud citizens about why taxes increased in the past and work to ensure that city council/government does not continue frivolously spending on shiny new toys that then require making further tax increases in the future.
I would strive to continue to uphold the U.S. Constitution and respect our forefathers as we did yesterday, should continue to today and strive to do so in the future; for it is similar to the Bible in that it is just as applicable today as it was so many years ago.
Beautification and other community proposed and selected items need to be strategized and planned for and not haphazardly decided when lacking fully developed strategic plans. Bedford has become stagnant. I would engage and work with the other council members to ensure that we were able to develop and implement sound strategic plans. I would push forward to move the discussions envisioned for so many years so that they could finally come to fruition. I would provide my own professional recommendations and experiences an an occupational therapist, yet ultimately put my own personal interests aside for the interest of the residents I would be serving.
As an Occupational Therapist, I am devoted to applying how engagement in occupation can address global health concerns of the 21st century by promoting health, well-being and quality of life across the lifespan. Bedford currently does not do a good job of providing the proper services to our residents in the areas of:
1) accessibility - whether that be public transportation for the blind/disabled/elderly, properly constructed/visible signage and ramps on sidewalks, or playgrounds for children with special abilities;
2) recreational services to the proper extent -whether that be in the amount/type of equipment at Bedford Senior Center or Bedford Boys Ranch, sub-par soccer fields, extremely limited biking trails, and the Bedford Jr. High literally has a track “field”;
3)Stagnation -whether that be in the lack of strategic city planning, the numerous amounts of “FOR LEASE” signs due to low business activity compared to our neighboring cities, or streets not being properly maintained. And many ask me, "when is the Bedford Commons suppose to start?! " A very good question indeed.
I have a vision to live in a place that has neighborhood values and a sense of community, where people care and are responsive and accountable to each other. Bedford government currently acts as big brother and HOA to the community...people call to report problems and violations are given out unfairly and inconsistently instead of initially reaching out in compassion. I want to ensure that we are fair and consistent in all that we do in expectations we have for our citizens as well as the city departments.
Lastly, I plan to promote more community involvement and communication. I have met many residents on the campaign trail that are intelligent, have great ideas and suggestions and have lived in Bedford for many years. Their wisdom would be invaluable and would serve in many different ways contribute more in the form of experience that our current city council lacks in many respects.
